Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University baseball team has won four of its last five games after defeating the Delaware State Hornets 14-7 today, Tuesday, April 5th. La Salle improves to 9-14 overall and is 9-4 since returning from its Florida trip.
La Salle got on the board first when senior Phil Marino (Blackwood, NJ/Highland) and sophomore Billy Kern (Northfield, NJ/Mainland) scored two first inning runs to give La Salle a 2-0 lead. Kern and Marino combined for seven of the Explorers 14 runs in the game.
The Hornets answered back in the second inning as they scored four runs and took a 4-2 lead. La Salle added one more in the second when senior Ryan Parfit (Flourtown, PA/La Salle) hit a sacrafice fly to right field scoring junior Mike Essery (Havertown, PA/Cardinal O'Hara). Delaware State held on to a 4-3 lead heading into the third inning and added two more runs to build a 6-3 lead by the third inning.
The Hornets remained in the driver seat until the bottom of the fourth inning when La Salle tied the game up at six. Psrfit scored the first run of the inning when Marino doubled. Sophomore Rich Prall (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) singled to right field sending both Marino and Kern home for the second and third runs of the inning.
The Explorers then added two more runs in the fifth inning when freshman Dennis Burge (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) tripled to center field and sent freshman John Rickards (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) home for the first run of the inning. Burge scored the second run of the inning when he snuck home on Kern's walk.
La Salle would go on to score six more runs in the game and come away with a 14-7 victory. Both Parfit and Marino finished the game 3-4 from the plate with a double each and three runs scored a piece. Prall, Rickards and junior George Hudock (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) went 3-5 and combined four eight RBI.
Sophomore Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Haverford) recorded his fifth save of the season as he came in to relieve junior Jarrod Ringer (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland). Ringer earned his second win as he pitched in just over three innings. Sophomore Dan Waters (Wyndmoor, PA/La Salle) started on the mound and pitched in the first three innings. Breslin struck out five of the eight batters he faced in over two innings of action.
La Salle will travel across town tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6th to play the Penn Quakers at 3:00 p.m. The Explorers are not scheduled to return home until April 16th when they host the Dayton Flyers.
