Women's Soccer Loses in Overtime

Posted by: Marc Mullen

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The La Salle University Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Navy, Sunday at Glenn Warner Stadium, when the Midshipmen's Molly Burd scored the game-winner at the 6:38 mark of the first overtime session.

For Burd, it was her second goal of the game and was assisted by Meggie Curran and Sarah Hessinger. Her shot from the top left of the box squirted through La Salle freshman goalkeeper Amy Grant's (Denver, PA/Cocalico) hands and into the net.

Despite allowing the overtime goal, Grant kept the Explorers in the game with key saves throughout. With the score knotted at 2-2, Navy's Iris Boivin had a one-on-one with Grant, which she stopped, and then minutes before the game-winner, she had another diving stop off a shot from Hessinger.

The Explorers got on the scoreboard first in the contest and early. Just six minutes into the game, a cross by Kim Lisun (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) was knocked into the Navy goal as a Midshipman defender misplayed the ball trying to clear the zone.

Navy (2-0) evened the score in the 25th minute, as Lauren Griebel headed home a corner kick by Curran. They took the lead four minutes after intermission, when Burd scored off another corner.

The Midshipmen held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Explorers 21-5.

Held without a shot in the entire first half, and down by a goal, La Salle's offense came together. Senior co-captain Alexis Petrucci (Abington, PA/Bishop McDevitt) managed two shot attempts and sophomore Kristin Hextall (Voorhees, NJ/Bishop Eustace) had one.

The Explorers tied the game back up when Hextall found freshman Traci DePasquale (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) on a run in the middle of the field. She beat the defender and goalkeeper for the equalizer in the 69th minute.

La Salle (0-2) will look to get into the win column this Wednesday, when they travel to Drexel with a start time of 4 PM. The Explorers have never lost to the Dragons (5-0) in the history of the program.
