PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle football team suffered a 65-27 loss in its home opener at the hands of the Monmouth Hawks. The loss dropped the Explorers to 0-2, while the Hawks improved to 1-1.

Monmouth opened the scoring early in the first quarter when John Nalbone caught a seven-yard pass from Brian Boland. The Explorers answered back with a 40-yard touchdown reception by Greg Vaccaro (West Essex, NJ/West Essex). After Monmouth's Davis Jiles took a kickoff 84 yards for a score, La Salle quarterback Michael Jump (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) found Vaccaro again, this time for a 70-yard score.

What looked like it was going to be a shootout quickly took a turn as Monmouth rattled off 28 unanswered points in the second quarter. Boland threw for two more touchdowns in that quarter, on his way to five on the day. The Explorers headed to the locker room at halftime trailing 42-13.

Things didn't get much better in the third quarter, as the Hawks tacked on 16 more points on a pair of Miles Austin touchdown receptions and a safety on a botched punt.

The Explorers found their way onto the scoreboard again in the fourth quarter as Kevin Sullivan ( Nanuet, NY/St. Joe's-Montvale) caught a 15-yarder. La Salle added another seven on Steve Adelman's (Tuscon, AZ/PIMA Jr. College) one-yard rush in the waning minutes.

Jump was 21-for-38 and threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Vaccaro caught for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Brumfield (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led the Explorers' rushers with 56 yards on the day.

Austin finished with three touchdowns and 228 yards on six catches for the Hawks. Boland added 273 yards to his five TDs on 12-for-17 passing.

La Salle will host Ursinus at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17 at McCarthy Stadium. The broadcast can be heard via Red Zone Media at GoExplorers.com beginning at 12:30.
