Men's Soccer Comes From Behind to Overtake Drexel, 2-1

Geoff Schaeffer tallied the winning goal in the Explorers' triumph over Drexel.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle men's soccer team gutted out a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Drexel in a Philadelphia Soccer Seven match at McCarthy Stadium. The Explorers, who have seen five of their six games this season reach overtime, were propelled to victory by a Geoff Schaeffer (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) goal off a rebound with just over two minutes to play in the second overtime.

La Salle (2-3-1) lined up for a corner kick that bounced around the box, eventually finding the foot of Schaeffer, who sent the ball past a diving Drexel goalkeeper Nick Macri.

Drexel (1-3-1) got on the board in the 37th minute, when Joe Banks headed a ball past La Salle keeper Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield). In scurrying for the ball, Bernhardt clanged heads with teammate Scott Golden (Tampa, FL/Jesuit). The collision left both players stunned and on the ground, and knocked Bernhard from the game. He had made one save before leaving.

Freshman Dan Pfieffer (Warminster, PA/William Tennant) continued his impressive play between the pipes as a replacement for Bernhard. Coming off a shutout of Bucknell on Sept. 14, Pfeiffer blanked the Drexel attack.

The lone Drexel goal appeared to be enough as the clock ran down, but a Drexel foul set up a Golden direct kick in the 89th minute. As Golden lined up for the kick, the Drexel defense appeared to be caught off guard and Golden drove the ball through the wall and past a sprawling Macri.

The Explorers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason.
