Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime

Posted by: Shawn Sweeney

Philadelphia, Pa. - Hartford's Kenniel Martin scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime as the Hawks defeated La Salle, 3-2, at the Drexel University Invitational Tournament at Vidas Field. Martin was tied up in the box with 2:57 left in the contest. It was the season-opener for each team.

La Salle got on the board in the game's second minute. Freshman Jim Davis (Pittsgrove, N.J./A.P. Schalick) put in a shot after receiving a header from Ryan Moseley (Nassau, Bahamas, Queens College). It turned out to be the only goal in the half. The Explorers outshot the Hawks, 10-6, in the first 45 minutes.

In the 64th minute, Hartford scored the equalizer when Costa Krystis was credited with a goal after his corner kick deflected off of a La Salle defender. La Salle had a number of good scoring opportunities, but Hartford's Ryan Carr made two outstanding saves within the course of two minutes to keep the game knotted at 1-1.

In the 71st minute, the Hawks got on the board once again. Mitchell Joseph fed Gorkhem Katoglu in alone on the left side, and Katoglu beat La Salle goalkeeper Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).

La Salle tied the game at 2-2 in the 82nd minute. Jim Davis sent in a feed to Jeremy Ortiz (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) who redirected the ball into the far corner. That closed the scoring in regulation and forced overtime.

La Salle will face Pittsburgh on Sunday at noon, while Hartford faces Drexel in the second game.
