Explorers defeated in closing minutes

Posted by: Marc Mullen

PHILADELPHI, PA - George Washington's Shari Taylor scored her second goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining to lift the Colonials to a 2-1 victory over the La Salle University Women's Soccer team, Friday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium, in both teams first game in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

With the game knotted at 1-1, Lise Backman connected with Taylor on a through ball from midfield. Taylor then beat two defenders and La Salle goalie Lauren Malizia (Richmond, VA/The Steward School) with a ball she put into the lower left corner of the goal for the game-winner at the 87:04 mark.

George Washington (4-5-0, 1-0 A-10) opened the scoring 16 minutes into the contest on Taylor's first goal of the game, her second of the season. She took control of the ball at midfield, dribbled up the right side, and scored with a shot into the lower left net.

The Explorers battled back and tied the game with just under 30 minutes to play. Senior Alexis Petrucci (Abington, PA/Bishop McDevitt) placed a ball into the upper left corner of the goal on a shot from the right 18 off an assist by sophomore Jenna Guagenti (Atco, NJ/Paul VI).

Petrucci's goal is her third of the season and the 14th of her career, which is 10th alltime at the school, and her 33 points is good for a tie for eighth.

Malizia made three saves in the loss, while Colonials' goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci made five stops for the victory.

La Salle (3-7-1, 0-1 A-10) will continue its first homestand of the season with conference games next Friday - Xavier, 3PM, and Sunday - Dayton, 1 PM.
