Connors-McBride, Welsh and Isajan Lead Explorers to Victory Over Fordham

PHILADELPHIA, PA - In their final home meet of the 2005-06 season, the La Salle University men's swimming and diving team earned a 159-83 victory over the visiting Fordham Rams at Kirk Pool on Saturday afternoon.

For the second time in as many days, junior Sean Connors-McBride led the Explorers with three first place finishes.  Connors-McBride claimed victory in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events along with the 200-yard butterfly.  In the 200 freestyle, Connors-McBride posted a time of 1:42.47 to place first, while Matt Ainsworth earned third place (1:44.91) and Chris Cefalo finished fourth (1:48.38).  In the 200-yard butterfly, a time of 1:55.11 earned Connors-McBride the victory and teammate Reed Inglee finished third (2:01.81).  Rounding out his first place finishes, Connors-McBride swam the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.08, while Emir Hubijar finished third with a time of 4:53.23.

John Welsh saw the finish line first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22:16 and then again in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.91.  Following Welsh in the 100-free were Kevin Whelan in second (49.75) and Chirs Cefalo in third (49.79).

The Explorers also swept the top three spots in the 1000-yard freestyle event with Hubijar taking the top honors with a time of 10:04.70 followed by Matt Magee in second (10:15.90) and Danny Evanilla (10:20.32) in third.

Grant Chin swam to a top finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.13 and senior Jack McCaffery took second place with a time of 2:01.56.  Chin added a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, while David Ellerson captured third place with a time of 2:15.20.

Diver Karo Isajan earned a pair of victories in the diving events, posting 290.25 points in the 3-meter event and 324.37 in the 1-meter event.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Explorers' team of Welsh, Ainsworth, Cefalo and Whelan claimed the first place finish with a time of 3:14.17.

La Salle will be back in action next Saturday, January 28th when the team takes on the Lehigh Mountainhawks at 12:00 p.m.
