PHILADELPHIA, PA - The field hockey team returned to Hank DeVincent Field for their 2006 Atlantic 10 home opener on Friday afternoon. The team hosted the Temple Owls and fell short in a 1-0 loss. With the loss, the Explorers drop to 4-11 for the season and 0-3 in the conference, while the Owls improve to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
After 10 uneventful minutes of play, the Owls drew a penalty corner and took advantage of their second and final corner of the game, as Leanne Vogelsong pushed the ball out to Mary Kinneman who stopped the ball and set up Alli Lokey who hit a line drive down the center of the cage at the 10:26 mark of the contest.
With both teams moving up and down the field, the offense never really got going for either team, as Temple managed eight total shots, with six on goal and La Salle managed just two wide shots for the contest.
La Salle earned three penalty corners, with one coming in the first half and two in the second, but Temple foiled all attempts.
Goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen logged 70 minutes in goal and tallied five saves for the afternoon. At the other end of the field, Erin Hanshue controlled the cage for 70 minutes.
The Explorers will be back in action at Hank DeVincent field on Sunday, October 15th, when they host the Saint Joseph's Hawks at 12:00 p.m.
