New Rochelle, NY - The La Salle Explorers (2-5, MAAC 0-2) turned the ball over five times in a 28-0 loss to the Iona Gaels (2-5, MAAC 1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
The Gaels scored first when a bad snap allowed Anthony Perlozzo's (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) punt to be blocked through the back of the end zone for a safety to end the Explorers' first offensive drive.
Just over three minutes later Chris Lofrese kicked the first of his four field goals of the afternoon. The score capped a seven-play drive that took 3:16 of playing time.
Perhaps the most critical of the turnovers came when the Gaels' Sean Madden wrestled a pass away from senior Kevin Sullivan (Nanuet, NY/St. Joseph's-Montvale) and took it 35 yards for the touchdown to make the score 22-0 with 4:39 left in the half. The interception was the third and final of the game for junior Joe Procopio (Calvert, MD/Calvert) who left the game with a concussion in the final minute of the first half.
The Explorers held Iona to six points in the second half but were shut-out on the day including their best scoring opportunity when they were unable to convert on a fourth and goal from the three yard line with 4:59 left in the game.
Senior Lou Russo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had five catches for 49 yards to bring his career total to 137 - just one reception shy of setting the school record currently held by John Zabel (2001-2005).
The 28-0 win provided Iona with its first shutout since a 24-0 win over Sacred Heart in 1999.
The Explorers will return home for the first time in three weeks when they host Husson on Saturday, October 28th at 1:00 PM. The game will be the first meeting between the two team and highlight Homecoming Week activities at La Salle University.
