PHILADELPHIA, PA - It was a story of two halves between the La Salle Explorers and the Massachusetts Minutewomen in an Atlantic 10 field hockey contest at Hank DeVincent Field on Sunday afternoon. In the end, the Minutewomen claimed a 4-3 overtime victory.
The first half was all La Salle, as the Explorers opened the scoring with Kara Harpel flipping in a shot off a rebounded corner with the help of Amy Comstock at the 7:53 mark of the contest. Late in the first half, Harpel scored a breakaway goal to put the Explorers up 2-0 with 3:09 to play in the half.
The Explorers drew a corner as time expired in the first half and as the corner played out, Colleen Nesbitt tipped in a shot to give La Salle a 3-0 advantage going into the break.
The control shifted in the second half, as UMass broke its scoring drought at the 47:26 mark when Cher King connected on a pass from Rachel Mervine on a penalty corner. The Minutewomen closed the gap to 3-2 at the 52:12 mark when Lauren Gillespie knocked in a shot on a cross pass from King.
Almost 14 minutes later, at the 66:11 mark of the contest, Katelyn Orlando passed teh ball in front of the cage as Gillespie tipped in the goal to knot the score at 3-3 and forced the game into overtime.
The overtime lasted just 1:52, as King netted the game-winning goal off a rebound shot with the help of Kristina DoRosario to lift the Minutewomen over the Explorers 4-3.
Goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen tallied eight saves in the contest and logged 71:52 of play, while Massachusetts goalkeeper Sarah Williams faced eight shots on goal and recorded five saves.
Both La Salle and Massachusetts each attempted seven penalty corners. The Minutewomen outshot La Salle by a 16-12 margin.
The Explorers will close out the home season on Saturday, October 28th, when they host the West Chester Golden Rams at Hank DeVincent Field at 12:00 p.m. Senior Amy Comstock, Laura Farley, Allison Geiger, Jillian Moser and Suzanne Strocen will be honored prior to the game.
