PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University (2-6, 0-2) could not convert on three scoring opportunities and were out scored 17-0 after taking the early lead in a 17-7 loss to Husson (5-4) on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Explorers got an early spark when Pat Brown (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick) stumbled initially but then returned the opening kick-off 63 yards to the Husson 34 to give the Explorers their best drive start position of the season. After a first down on a 16-yard Kevin Sullivan (Nanuet, NY/St. Joseph's Montvale) carry the drive sputtered and Anthony Perlozzo (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) missed on a 31-yard field goal attempt.
La Salle's lone score came on their second drive when Lou Russo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) took a pass from Joe Procopio (Calvert, MD/Calvert) 44 yards for the touchdown. The catch was one of six on the day for the senior who became La Salle's all-time receptions leading surpassing John Zabel's (2002-05) previous career mark of 138 catches.
The Explorers' next big opportunity came up shy when Husson kept Sullivan out of the end zone on a fourth and goal from the two with seconds remaining in the half. The Explorers settled for a 7-0 lead at the break.
Husson's first score came when kicker Darren Gauthier hit his first field goal of the season - a 31-yarder with 3:28 left in the third quarter.
The Explorers also burned themselves with turnovers as Procopio threw three more interceptions in the game.
Husson back Brian Ferguson ran for 137 yards and two scores included a one yard carry with 1:31 remaining in the game.
The Explorers last-ditched effort was thwarted when Perlozzo's 26-yard field goal was wiped out by a delay of game with under 15 seconds to play - his ensuing attempt drifted wide.
The Explorers play their final home game of the season when they host defending MAAC Football League champion Duquesne on Saturday, November 4 at 6:00 PM.
