Explorers Wrap Up 2006 Season with Loss at Delaware

NEWARK, DE - The La Salle field hockey team closed out the 2006 season on the road at Delaware's Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Explorers ended the day with a 5-2 loss and finish the season with a 7-13 overall record.

Delaware opened the game with three straight goals, as Molly Burke shot from five yards out on a pass from Casey Howard at the 8:01 mark of the game. Howard followed up at the 9:48 mark, knocking in a rebound off the post from A.J. Karsten. The Blue Hens made it 3-0 at the 11:26 mark when Howard scored on a penalty corner with the assistance of Stephanie Swain and Kaili Kao.

La Salle senior Laura Farley made the most of her final collegiate game, taking a pass from freshman Kelly Dougherty from 15 yards out to close the gap to 3-1 after 12:32 of play. Almost ten minutes later, Farley set up fellow senior Amy Comstock for a goal off a penalty corner.

Barker closed out the first half score as she dribbled a shot from 10 yards out to give Delaware a 4-1 advantage going into halftime.

In the second half, Howard completed a hat trick at the 45:58 mark as she tipped in a backhand shot straight down the middle of the net to close out the scoring at 5-2.

La Salle goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen logged 50:44 in the let and allowed five goals while recording three saves. Christa Buccilli checked in for the last 19:16 of play and earned two saves. At the other end of the field, Delaware goalkeeper Nikki Rhodes played all 70 minutes and tallied four goals.

Both teams drew six penalty corners in the contest and the teams were close in shots, with Delaware holding a 14-12 advantage.
