La Salle Drops Close Match Against Charlotte 1-0

Posted by: Steve Mair

CHARLOTTE, NC - Friday night's game between the Explorers (5-6-1) and the Charlotte 49ers (7-3-2) proved to be an evenly matched competition on both sides of the ball.  Charlotte would edge out La Salle in the final minutes, however, to claim the 1-0 victory.

Solid play from both teams kept the ball out of the nets for almost the entire game.  The 49ers eventually took the win when senior midfielder Pete Palomino would make an impressive volley with the ball to score in the 82nd minute of play, claiming the one and only goal of the game.

La Salle would take 11 shots in the game, against Charlotte's 9, and both teams would walk away with 8 fouls a piece.  Both Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) and Charlotte goalkeeper David Martin would also both make 3 saves in the game.

Charlotte's coach was complimentary of the Explorers' gameplay, and despite the loss, Coach Pat Farrell was optimistic.  "This was a high level game that was played well on both sides.  Charlotte was an A-10 playoff team last year and the game could have easily gone either way."

Men's soccer will be on the road for the next three games, taking on Richmond this Sunday for a 1pm game, followed by St. Bonaventure and Fordham next weekend.
