ST. LOUIS - Despite taking a two-goal lead, La Salle dropped a 3-2 decision to Fordham in the second game of the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championships, hosted by Saint Louis University.
The Rams scored two goals in a span of 1:12 in the second half to first tie and then take the lead. The Explorers continued to battle, but could not get an equalizer.
The Explorers (9-10-1) struck early, as Kristin Hextall scored her sixth goal of the year just 6:22 into the match. Junior Jenna Guagenti took a corner kick on the right side of the net and as Fordham tried to clear the ball out, junior Shelby Reese headed the ball back into the box where Hextall headed it into the net.
Twelve minutes later, Hextall tallied again to push the Explorer lead to 2-0. Freshman Melanie Gamble started the play as she found senior Ashley Cassel in the left corner of the field. Cassel crossed the ball in front of the goal, where Hextall beat the Rams' goalie Elisabeth Roald to the ball and headed it in.
Fordham (13-6) answered in the 28th minute when Katie Sanchez passed a ball to Holly Laubinger, who made a 10-yard run with the ball on the left side of the net and scored from 12-yards out into the upper right of the goal.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, La Salle goalkeeper Amy Grant made her third save on a Breean Daley shot to preserve the Explorers lead heading into intermission.
With the lead, the Explorers continued to pressure the Rams, outshooting them 4-0 through the first 20 minutes of the second half. However, the game changed quickly after the 65th minute.
In the next five minutes, the Rams had four corner kicks and took four shots, with Grant making two saves. Sanchez would then tie the game at the 70:34 mark, and then a minute later assisted on the game-winner by Erica Frizzell.
After the entire tournament - won by the host Saint Louis Billikins - the A-10 announced the All-Tournament Team, which included Hextall.
