STATEN ISLAND, NY - It was a tale of two halves for the La Salle University Women's Basketball in the Explorers' 74-53 victory over Wagner College Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Spiro Sports Center.

In the first half, the Explorers were held to their lowest first-half output of the season, committed 15 turnovers, shot 40% from the floor, while Wagner hit almost 50% from the field. In the second, La Salle hit 57% from the field and held the Seahawks to 22% and outrebounded Wagner 29-15.

Senior Crista Ricketts (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) and junior Carlene Hightower (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) both recorded double-doubles by matching their 18 points with 11 rebounds. They also added three assists to their totals, while Hightower also had four steals and two blocks.

Senior Jenna Graber (Clarkesburg, NJ/Peddie School) scored a season-high 15 points as she hit five three-point baskets, freshman Morgan Robertson (Amarillo, TX/Amarillo) chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while sophomore Tara Lapetina (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) had six points and seven assists.

Wagner (1-3) trailed by three early, but used a 12-2 run over a five-minute span to open up a seven-point lead at 14-7 with 12:42 left in the first half, which was sparked by five straight points by Chelsey Bunyer, who finished with nine points.

It took the Explorers more than seven minutes to erase the deficit, getting a nice lift from the bench as Robertson scored four points, grabbed three rebounds, and had her two blocks in the run, and when Ricketts scored with 5:03 left before the half, the game was tied back at 20 apiece.

Neither team could shake the other before intermission, but the Seahawks did score the last six points of the half, four by John'a Poole, who scored all of her team-high 14 points in the first. Wagner took a three-point lead into the locker room, then scored first just 20 seconds into the second half to take a 37-32 advantage.

However, La Salle responded with 13 unanswered points and used a 21-4 run overall to open a double figure lead and Wagner would never get closer. The Explorers lead grew to as many as 24 in the second half, thanks to Hightower, who scored 16 of her 18 in the half and Graber, who knocked down three three-pointers.

La Salle (5-0) will finally host its first game of the season when they welcome Binghamton Bearcats to Tom Gola Arena, Wednesday night with a 7:00 PM tip.
