Posted by: Sue SennerPHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle women's swimming & diving team opened teh 2006-07 home season on Friday afternoon against the CW Post Pioneers. The Explorers earned a 157-100 victory and now boast a 2-1 record for the season.
La Salle freshman Shannon Duval (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/Holy Name Convent) set her second school record in as many meets. Duval set the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.13 on the first 100 yards of the 200 breaststroke and went on to win the event with a total time of 2:19.61, more than 10 seconds faster than teammate Rachel Sheridan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) who placed second with a time of 2:29.96. She broke the previous record of 1:07.24 set by Alison Heider in 1995. Duval also captured a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle event with a time of 1:53.47. Swimming the second leg of the 200 yard medley relay, Duval earned another victory as the team finished the event with a time of 4:00.20.
Sophomore Carleen Caldwell (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) sprinted to first place finishes in two events, claiming victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.49 and in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.21. Caldwell swam the final leg of the 400 yard medley relay to earn her third first place finish of the meet.
Mallory Kessler (Doylestown, PA/Bishop Shanahan) joined Duval and Caldwell in sweeping her events. Kessler swam a gold medal performance in the 100 yard breaststorke with a time of 1:09.27 and finished the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.01.
The Explorers will return to action on November 11th when the host the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at 1:00 p.m. at Kirk Pool.
