PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University Explorers (2-7, 03) forced four turnovers but also gave the ball away six times in Duquesne's (7-3, 3-1) 38-0 win in a MAAC Football League game on Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium.
The Dukes converted three separate third down situations into touchdowns and the Explorers fumbled the ball away on the first play after recovering a Duquesne botched punt on the opponent's 18-yard line in the second quarter to help Duquesne out to a 14-0 lead.
They added to their lead when quarterback Chris Hanson (Southampton, PA/Archbishop Wood) threw one of his four interceptions on the night into the arms of Chris Hough who took the return 98-yards for the score. The pick-six was one of three occasions in which the Explorers made it into red zone without scoring a point.
After trailing 35-0 at the half the Explorers held Duquesne to just three-points in the second half on a Mark Troyan field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Perlozzo (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) had an opportunity to break the shut-out but had a 32-yard field goal blocked with 5:04 left in the third quarter.
Junior defensive back John Costello (West Chester, PA/WC Henderson) added to his team lead in take-ways by recovering two fumbles and also a blocked field goal attempt with 1:34 remaining in the game. He also has two interceptions to bring his total take-aways to four.
The Explorers wrap-up their season with a Thursday MAAC Football League match-up at St. Peter's on November 9th with kick-off set for 7:00 PM.
