Posted by: Kale Beers

IOWA CITY, IA - With seven seconds remaining in the game and his team winning 63-61, Brian Burrell of Texas - Pan American (5-2) missed the first shot on a one-and-one, allowing freshman Yves Mekongo Mbala (Elizabeth, NJ/St. Patrick's) to grab the rebound.  He promptly outleted to Rodney Green (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) who sliced into the lane and dished a pass to Darnell Harris (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances) who drilled his third three-pointer of the night to give the La Salle University Explorers (4-1) an exciting 64-63 win over the Broncs.  The Saturday night win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena gave the Explorers a third-place finish and a 1-1 split in the Hawkeye Challenge hosted by the University of Iowa.

Just before that squence Green had buried a pair of free throws to halve a four-point Bronc lead at 63-61 and set-up the foul by Sherman Diaz to stop the clock and send Burrell, who led his team with 16 points, to his ill-fated visit at the stripe.

Harris, who went 6 for 16 (.375) from the arc in the two-day tourney, and had struggled to make three-pointers at key points thoughout the opening round loss to Coppin State a night earlier finished with 16 off his own points to lead La Salle.  It marked the second time he ended a game with a win on walk-off shots.  Last season he hit two of three foul shots with no time remining to help the Explorers outlast Central Connecticut ina four-overtime affair in New Britain, CT.

The Explorers, who trailed at halftime for the first time all season, were down by as many as seven points in the second half until Green scored on a pair of strong interior moves on consecutive possessions, capping the latter with a made free-throw for a three-point play to give his team a 44-42 edge at the 14:04 mark of the second half.

Texas Pan- American would stay within reach and eventually regain the lead with 1:15 to play when Paul Stoll hit a three-pointer to put the Broncs up 60-59.  Explorer senior Mike St. John had a chance to reclaim the lead but missed the first shot of a one-and-one with 42 seconds to play.  The Explorers struggled from the stripe for the second consecutive night with just 14-22 (.632) shooting.

On the Broncs ensuing possession Stoll made one of two foul shots, missing the second, but the Explorers could not control the rebound which forced them to foul Burrell who hit two shots to give UTPA a 63-59 lead with 23 seconds left.

Green drew a foul on the other end and made both free throws to draw within two points at 63-51 with seven seconds remining, thus setting up the dramatic finish.

Green finished the game with 16 points while Harris added 15 of his own.  Mekongo Mbala came one rebound shy of his first career double-double with 13 points and nine boards.

Harris was named to the Hawkeye Challenge All-Tourney team with Burrell, Tywain McKee (Coppin State), and the host Hawkeyes' Justin Johnson, Tyler Smith and Adam Haluska.

After three games on the road the Explorers retunr home on Thursday night with a 7:00 PM tip-off against Maryland - Baltimore County at Tom Gola Arena.
