Explorers Drop Game at George Washington

Posted by: Marc Mullen

Jenna Graber set the mark for most made threes in a season.

Davineia Payne missed a double-double by one point.

WASHINGTON, DC - The La Salle University Women's Basketball team has never beaten George Washington at the Charles E. Smith Center and they left the nation's capital with another loss at the hands of the Colonials, this one a 67-49 defeat Friday night in Atlantic 10 action.

The Explorers had two players reach double figures, sophomore Carlene Hightower (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Prendergast), who did it for the sixth straight game with 15 points, and junior Jenna Graber (Clarksburg, NJ/Peddie School), who added 12 points.

The Colonials, though, had three players reach 10+ points, led by two players who recorded double-doubles. Whitney Allen scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds, while Jazmine Adair had 12 points and 12 boards.

Hightower started the game with a three-point basket, but the Colonials scored the game's next nine points and when George Washington's Jessica Simmonds was fouled on a lay-up with 16:07 left in the first half, every starting Colonial was in the scorebook; and they led 13-5.

George Washington (18-6, 11-2 A-10) pushed its lead to 10 at 19-9 seven minutes into the game, however a 9-2 run by La Salle over the next three minutes cut the Colonial lead to three. Graber started and ended the run with three-point baskets, while senior Davineia Payne (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) also hit a three, and the Explorers trailed 21-18 with 10:04 left in the first.

The Colonials increased their lead to as many as 10, again, and took a seven-point lead (35-28) into the locker room thanks to balanced scoring - seven players with at least three points; defense -- forced La Salle into 12 turnovers, resulting in 15 points; and offensive rebounding - nine resulting in six points.

La Salle (11-13, 7-6 A-10) continued to hang around with the Colonials, but when Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored with 11:19 left in the game, La Salle was down 11.

They responded with another Graber three - her 63rd of the season, giving her the single-season record for made threes. After junior Crista Ricketts (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) finished off a three-point play with a made foul shots at the 10:36 mark, the Explorers trailed by just five (50-45).

An 8-0 run by the Colonials pushed their lead back to double digits and the Explorers would never get closer again.

La Salle was without the services of senior Shaune McLaughlin (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Regional), who is day-to-day with a shoulder injury. Stepping in for her was freshman Tara Lapetina (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll), who had four assists. Payne also had four assists, to go along with her team-high 11 rebounds and nine points.

George Washington extended its home-winning streak to 10 straight. They had not lost a home game since Dec. 7, 2005 when they lost to (at the time) top-ranked Tennessee, 59-43.

The Explorers return to Philadelphia for their next game, but travel to the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Saint Joseph's to take on the Hawks, Sunday, Feb. 19 with a 2 PM tip.
