Bonczek Nets Three Goals in Season Opener

Emily Bonczek opens season with three goals against Colgate.
HAMILTON, NY - La Salle's 2006 lacrosse season opened with an 18-6 loss at Colgate's Tyler field on Saturday afternoon.  This marked Colgate's seventh straight season-opening win, while the Explorers now stand at
0-1.

 

Colgate got the scoring started at the 7:01 mark when Molly Carroll netted an unassisted goal.  La Salle's Emily Bonczek answered three minutes later (10:13) to mark the score at 1-1.

 

The Red Raiders then opened their lead with four straight goals, as Kelly Winning netted back-to-back goals at 11:42 and 12:00, followed by back-to-back goals by Katie McVeigh at 15:15 and 18:49 to give Colgate a 5-1 advantage.

 

Last season's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Bonczek stopped the scoring drive by knocking in her second goal with 9:11 to play in the first half.  Colgate answered 20 seconds later with its sixth goal by Tara Casey followed by Winning's third of the afternoon.

 

La Salle freshman Maura Kenville got assistance from fellow freshman Ann Anderson with just under six minutes to play in the half to record her first collegiate goal.  Colgate's Jess Vander Meulen closed out the first half scoring and gave the Red Raiders an 8-3 lead going into the break.

 

The second half was a carbon copy scoring wise, with Colgate out scoring the Explorers 8-3.  In the final half, Bonczek scored her final goal with 24:15 to play.  Tiffany Grossi took help from Erika Matthews for a goal and Kelly Heiss added La Salle's final goal.

 

La Salle goalkeeper Chantelle McCormick tallied eight saves and Colgate's Sue Bielamowicz recorded 12 for the game.  Colgate out shot the Explorers 30-23, while La Salle committed two less turnovers, holding a 15-17 edge.

 

The Explorers will look for the first win of the season tomorrow, when they visit the Great Danes of Albany at 12:00 p.m.
