Posted by: Sue Senner-- Head field hockey coach Sarah Catlin announces the signing of four new faces for the 2006 Explorer team. Two of the players spent their high school years playing not so far from La Salle, while the other two come from across state lines.
Kelly Dougherty joins the Explorers after an exceptional four years at Archbishop Carroll High School (Radnor, PA). Dougherty, a starter since her sophomore year, was a member of Carroll's two Catholic League Championship teams. A captain for the 2005 championship team, Dougherty also garnered All-Catholic League, All-Main Line, and All-DelCo awards. With 10 goals and six assists, Dougherty will add great attacking skills to either the midfield or defense at
La Salle. A three-sport athlete, Dougherty also played lacrosse and basketball for Carroll. Off the field, she has been involved in the Student Council, was a student ambassador, and was elected Junior Class Vice President. A two-time attendee at the National Field Hockey Festival with the Viper Club, Dougherty brings a well rounded approach to La Salle.
Coach Catlin on Dougherty: "Kelly continues the tradition of strong catholic league athletes continuing their education at La Salle. I love her versatility and strong field sense. I look forward to seeing her develop as either a midfielder or attacking defender."
Haley Froshour honed her skills at Council Rock North High School in Newtown, PA. This team captain saw her squad finish second in very competitive Suburban One League. A defender, Froshour garnered recognition as First Team All-League, First Team Courier Times, and First Team All-State. She looks to add considerable quickness to the Explorer backfield. Routinely up against some of the best players in the state, Froshour will most definitely face them again in the collegiate ranks. Adept in defensive stick work, she is rarely rattled and is used to playing in high pressure situations. Additionally, Froshour will look to keep up her strong academic standing for the Blue and Gold. A member of the Distinguished Honor Roll at Council Rock North, Froshour also holds membership in the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
Coach Catlin on Froshour: "Haley fits the mold of the ideal defender. She is super quick and super intelligent. That her intelligence continues in the classroom simply makes her that much of a better fit to this La Salle squad."
Erica Goldman joins the Explorers from Baltimore, MD where she competed at the Friends School. A four-year varsity starter and two-time team captain, Goldman will look to challenge for time on the front line. As a forward, Goldman was her team MVP and named to the First Team All-City, following up her Second Team All-City honor from her junior season. Goldman has also been actively involved in both indoor and outdoor leagues in the Baltimore area. A year-round hockey player, Goldman is a classic finisher from the left wing position. In the spring, she also played on the varsity lacrosse team at the Friends School.
Coach Catlin on Goldman: "Erica has an enthusiasm for all that she does. Her energy is contagious and she is dedicated to becoming a great field hockey player. I look forward to seeing her put some points on the board for us."
Rounding out this group of signees, Colleen Lechner travels to La Salle from Brighton High School near Rochester, NY. A four-year varsity field hockey player and senior captain, Lechner has led her team in scoring for the past three years. She has attended the National Field Hockey Festival for the past four years, winning the F pool in her junior year with the Rochester Blizzards. A two-time National Indoor Tournament attendee, Lechner has also attended various other indoor tournaments. All this experience led to being selected as team MVP, First Team All-County, and All-State accolades in her senior season. Excellent possession skills, with a sense for the goal makes Lechner a danger to opponents anywhere on the field. An intended nursing major, Lechner was selected to participate in the Nursing Internship at The University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital program.
Coach Catlin on Lechner: "The student-athletes that join our program with the intention of being nursing majors have been textbook "work hard, play hard" team members. Colleen fits this mold to a "T"; I expect her to continue to excel in both of her passions: field hockey and nursing."
This already well rounded and experienced class will boast two more additions in the near future. Make sure to keep your eye on the fall schedule to the all the Explorers in action!
