Could He Be The Stopper of the Year?

Posted by: Marc Mullen

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Junior Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Havertown) of La Salle and Charlotte's Erik Walker are among 30 players named to the Stopper of the Year Award Watch List, it was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

A first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2005, Breslin ranked second in the Conference with 27 appearances while his nine saves were tied for the second in the A-10. Those two numbers surpassed the single-season record in their respective categories at the school. The nine saves upped his career total to 15, which is also now the most by an Explorer.

The righthander compiled a 1.71 earned run average and registered 61 strikeouts in 58.0 innings pitched. At one point last season, Breslin led the nation with a 0.97 ERA, which helped him get named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List in 2005.

Walker established a Charlotte single-season record with 12 saves in 2005 while holding opposing hitters to a .173 batting average. The senior righthander notched 67 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched and enters the 2006 campaign as the program's all-time leader in saves (19).

Presented to the top relief pitcher in Division I, the nation's leader in saves and four additional relief pitching standouts will be selected as the award's finalists at the end of the regular season. These finalists will be released on Wednesday, May 31, just prior to the beginning of NCAA regional play.

From the list of finalists, the NCBWA's All-America Committee will select a winner. The 2nd annual winner will be announced on Wednesday, June 7, two days prior to the beginning of NCAA Super Regional action.
