Posted by: Shawn SweeneyWASHINGTON, DC - The La Salle softball team (8-9, 1-1 Atlantic 10) opened up conference play by splitting a doubleheader at George Washington (14-10, 1-1). In the first game, the Explorers held off a late Colonial rally to win 2-1. In the second game, George Washington came out on top, 6-4.
In game one, the Explorers scored twice in the third as Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) and Carissa Segura (Santa Maria, CA/Ernest Righetti) each delivered two-out RBI singles. GW staged a comeback, and got on the board with a Caitlin Howe RBI in the sixth, but DeZolt worked her way out of a two-on, two-out jam by getting Chrysanthi Halkiotis to fly out to left to end the threat. DeZolt went seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine batters.
In the nightcap, the Explorers jumped out to an early lead as Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA/St. Basil) led off the game with a home run. The Colonials bounced back in the third, however, and took the lead for good with four runs in the frame including by back-to-back RBI singles from Nikki Brooks and Howe. George Washington added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead. La Salle mounted a comeback, loading the bases and scoring two runs to chase GW starter Katie Miller. Kristin Gallant came on in relief and walked in another run to make it 6-4, but retired the final two batters to get out of the inning. She pitched a perfect seventh to secure the save.
The Explorers will travel to Ohio on Friday, March 24, for a double dip with Dayton beginning at 2:00 p.m.
