Posted by: Marc MullenPHILADELPHIA, PA - With his tremendous pitching performance and his effort at the plate, the Atlantic 10 Conference announced Monday that La Salle University Baseball freshman Ken Elkind was named the Rookie of the Week. Elkind becomes only the second-ever Explorer baseball player to receive the honor.
In just his second collegiate start, Elkind combined to throw La Salle's first shutout of the season, limiting the Flyers to just two hits over six innings and also fanned six batters. He allowed just one extra base hit and Dayton batted just .105 against him as Elkind won his first game of the season.
His six shutout innings on Friday started what was the best pitching performance turned out by the Explorers in a three-game series in A-10 play. La Salle held Dayton to just one run over 26 innings, collecting two shutouts. It was the first-ever series win over Dayton and the Explorers have never thrown two shutouts in the same series in A-10 action. The lowest runs allowed before this weekend was when La Salle gave up six runs to Saint Joseph's, April 5-6, 1997.
Elkind also helped the Explorers to a 4-1 week at the plate. He was 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double in their 5-4 victory over Temple, Tuesday, in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic. A day later, he went 2-for-3 against Delaware with one run scored and another RBI.
He now joins former Explorer Bryan Harvey as the only other La Salle baseball player to be named A-10 Rookie of the Week. Harvey was honored March 19, 2001 after getting his first win, pitching 7.1 innings in a 6-4 Explorer victory over Wagner.
