Posted by: Marc MullenWILMINGTON, NC - In the first of three series the La Salle Baseball team will be playing in the state of North Carolina, the Explorers were swept in their first by UNC-Wilmington, dropping Sunday's game to the Seahawks, 12-1, at Brooks Field.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Explorers answered with their only run of the game in the top of the second. Junior John Vincent led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Two batter later, sophomore Dennis Burge drove him in with an RBI single.
UNC-Wilmington (10-3) plated another in the bottom of the second, then rode Jonathan Batts and Zach Brooker the rest of the way. Batts tied a school record with three home runs in the game, connecting on round trippers in the third, seventh and eighth innings, driving in five runs in all.
Brooker (3-0) threw six innings, allowing just four hits, the Vincent run and struck out seven batters. The Seahawk bullpen combined for three innings of work, allowed just one hit, and struck out four.
Sophomore Brandon Geib (0-2) suffered the loss for the Explorers as he was hurt by seven walks in his 4.2 innings of work.
La Salle (0-6) will now face Campbell in a doubleheader, Monday at 3 PM, and then will take on Duke for two games with the Blue Devils, Tuesday and Wednesday, both games at 3 PM .
