Explorers Split Doubleheader with Camels

BUIES CREEK, NC - The La Salle Baseball team split a doubleheader with the Campbell Camels, losing the first, 7-6, but earned its first win of the year with a 9-8 victory in the nightcap, Monday at Taylor Field.

The Explorers, held to just one run through the days' first five innings, exploded for five runs in the sixth inning of game one, but could only get their deficit down to 7-6 before falling in the scheduled seven-inning contest.

Their bats stayed hot in the second game, as they plated four runs in the first two innings. The Camals tied the game three times (in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings), and each time La Salle would take the lead back. In the eighth inning, La Salle's Justin Handler scored what became the winning run in game two.

Enjoying a successful twinbill were senior George Hudock - 2-for-3, with a triple, two walks and three runs scored; freshman Handler - 5-for-9, a double, RBI, and three runs; junior Rich Prall - 3-for-9, two doubles and two RBI; and sophmore Dennis Burge - 2-for-6, two triples, two runs and four RBI.

Sophomore Jamie Cowan earned the first win of the season for La Salle, pitching the last two innings in game two. Freshman Drew Gerhart pitch the first game and suffered his first loss.

Campbell (4-8) was led by Ricky Howard - 4-for-6, three runs, a home run and four RBI; Blair Waggett - 2-for-4, a double, home run, two RBI and three runs; and Nate Logan - 2-for-4, a triple, run, and three RBI.

Joe Waldecker earned the victory in the first game, pitching five innings, and allowing just one run on two hits and striking out six batters.

La Salle (1-7) finishes its North Carolina swing with two games against Duke, Tuesday and Wednesday, each starting at 3 PM.
