Grand Slam, 10-Run Inning Snap Skid As Explorers Split With St. Francis

BROOKLYN, NY - The La Salle softball team (9-22) put a halt to its 14-game losing streak with a 13-6 win in game two of a doubleheader with St. Francis (2-37) that was highlighted by a 10-run fourth inning that featured a Kelli Curcio (Hatboro, PA/St. Basil) grand slam. The Terriers took the first game 6-2, ending their own losing streak of 20 games.

Pitcher Lea Corcoran (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake Community) earned her first collegiate win, aided by the Explorers' offense exploding for 13 runs. The freshman struck out four batters in five innings of work in the darkness-shortened game. Corcoran (1-8) allowed five hits, seven walks and six runs (four earned).

The 13 runs are the most La Salle has scored in a game this season. Entering the day, the Explorers had combined to score 13 runs over their last 11 games, stretching back to game two of a doubleheader at Dayton on March 24.

La Salle saw four players with two or more hits in the game, led by leadoff hitter Danielle Signorelli (Jenkintown, PA/St. Basil), who went 3-for-4 with a double.

The Terriers opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third before La Salle erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning. After St. Francis pitcher Serena Varvas walked in a run, Teddi Hernandez (Hanford, CA/Hanford) singled home another to make it a one-run game. Varvas then loaded the bases for Curcio, whose grand slam put the Explorers ahead. It was Curcio's third round-tripper of the season. The next batter, catcher Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) hit a solo shot, her fifth of the season, to make the score 7-3.

After the back-to-back homers, Varvas was lifted for Sarah Purtle, who allowed two runs on four consecutive singles without recording an out. Purtle was then relieved by Amanda Havdoglous, who got Kate Gulkis (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil) to pop up to record the third out.

In the first game, St. Francis had a 5-0 lead after two innings. The Explorers got on the board in the third when Signorelli hit a solo home run, her third of the year. La Salle added another run in the fourth when Hernandez drove home Jen Street (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan), who had doubled. The Terriers added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-2.

Laura Dezolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) took the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits. DeZolt (7-8) struck out eight and walked eight.

The Explorers will return home to Good Shepherd Field on Friday, April 14 for a doubleheader with Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure. The first pitch is slated to begin at 9:45 a.m., with game two scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. start.
