Bonczek And Anderson Score Three Each In Loss To UMass

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sophomore Emily Bonczek and freshman Ann Anderson each registered a hat trick in La Salle's 16-10 loss to the Massachusetts Minutewomen on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Both teams now own a 5-9 overall record, with UMass holding a 2-2 record in the Atlantic 10, while the Explorers stand at 1-3.

It was a tight first half, with the Explorers putting the first score of the day on the board as Maura Kenville nailed a shot with the help of Catie Borneman 4:59 into the game. Borneman made it 2-0 for La Salle, scoring an unassisted goal 9:42 into the period.

The Minutewomen answered with two goals, as Kaytlin McCormick scored with 19:25 to play followed by Kathleen Typadis' first of five goals with 16:41 to play in the half.

With the score tied at 2-2, La Salle's Emily Bonczek scored on back-to-back free position shots at 16:15 and 18:40 to give La Salle a 4-2 lead. The lead was short lived, as Typadis scored her second with 10:06 to play, also on a free position shot, followed by Jeanette Villapiano off a pass from Kristina Twichell with 6:30 to go before the break. Tied a 4-4, UMass got an unassisted goal from Meghan Reddy with 2:39 to go in the half to get its first lead of the contest.

After the break, Typadis tallied her third at 36:17 to give the Minutewomen a 6-4 lead. Freshman Ann Anderson scored next for La Salle at 37:58 off a pass from Borneman, followed by Typadis' fourth and then a second by Anderson with 20:08 to go in regulation. The teams traded the next series of goals and with the score standing at 8-7 in favor of UMass, the Minutewomen opened up the scoring with six straight goals between the 42:37 and 50:49 mark.

Sitting on a 14-7 lead, the Minutewomen's scoring run was halted by Bonczek with 8:09 to go in the contest. UMass netted the next two goals before the Explorers Kenville knocked in her second on a free position shot followed by Anderson's third and final goal with 2:06 to play. The deficit proved too much for the Explorers, as the Minutewomen claimed the 16-10 decision.

UMass held a 31-27 advantage over the Explorers on shots and a 40-27 advantage in ground balls. The Minutewomen also took the draw control 17 times to La Salle's 11.

The Explorers committed just nine fouls in the contest, including one yellow card by Kaylan Billingsley with 1:30 remaining in the game. UMass committed 30 fouls and posted yellow cards by Connerty at 24:12 of the first half and Villapiano with 3:03 to play in the second half.

La Salle split the goalkeeping duties, with Chantelle McCormick playing the first 49:59, facing 28 shots and allowing 13 goals enroute to eight saves. Brittany Friedrich checked-in for the last 10:01 and faced three shots, each one converting to a goal for the Minutewomen. Massachusetts goalkeeper Krissy Anderson played the duration of the game, earning 11 saves and facing 27 shots while giving up 10 goals.

The Explorers will return to action at McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday, April 19th when they host the Temple Owls in an Atlantic 10 match-up at 4:00 p.m.
