Posted by: Michelle DeLongPHILADELPHIA, PA - After several years of not competing for the Bergen Cup, the Philadelphia college crew teams welcomed it back Saturday in a 2000-meter race on the Schuylkill River, and the La Salle University Crew team won three of the races.
The three Explorer boats that crossed the finish line first were all four boats. The Men's Varsity Four beat Temple (6:45.88) in a time of 6:38.45.
The other two wins were by the Women's Varsity Four, which finished in a time of 8:03.64 ahead of St. Joseph's, and the Women's Freshman/Novice Four, who crossed the line in 7:33.36, beating both St. Joseph's and Temple.
La Salle boats also raced in the Men's Varsity Eight (third place - 6:00) and Women's Varsity Eight (fourth - 7:02.9), the Men's JV Eight (third - 6:20) and Women's JV Eight (foruth - 7:08.34) and Men's Freshman/Novice Four (second - 7:27.1).
The Explorers next and last race of the season will be at the Dad Vail Regatta on May 12th and 13th on the Schuylkill River.
Also, after the racing on Saturday, the Explorers dedicated one of their our boats, naming it "Aunt Roe" after Aimee Nichol's aunt who has done so much for the team, which includes organizing the tent at each race and taking pictures of all the races.
The boat is the Women's Varsity boat, which has been involved in two wins so far (La Salle has had the boat since the Fall of 2005) - the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta (Fall 2005) and Frostbite Regatta (Fall 2006).
