Explorers Drop a Pair to Rhode Island

Posted by: Marc Mullen

KINGSTON, RI - After two days of rain, the La Salle University Baseball team and Rhode Island finally played some ball. The Explorers lost both games Sunday to the Rams, 4-1 and 8-1.

La Salle (9-19, 4-4 A-10) led 1-0 after four innings in the first game, plating a run on back-to-back walks by Bill Kern and Rich Prall. John Rickards scored Kern with a single to right field.

Ken Elkind pitched six strong innings, scattering three hits and striking out six. However, after getting the first out of the seventh, three straight batters reached base culminating with Zach Zaneski's RBI-double scoring the Rams' first run of the game.

Gerard Breslin stopped the rally with a strikeout, but walked the next batter to load the bases. Rhode Island cleared the bases on a fielding error on a deep fly ball hit by Dave Savard, and took a 4-1 lead.

That was all the run support needed by Stephen Holmes, who earned his fifth win of the season after pitching eight innings and striking out 10. Tom Venedam picked up his second save of the season after pitching the ninth inning.

In the second game, the Rams used a six-run first inning to cruise to the 8-1 victory. The key hits in the inning were two-RBI singles by both Scott Brown and Shaun Hagey.

Rhode Island (16-6, 6-2) got another strong outing from its game two starter Adam Perkings. He earned the win after pitching six innings giving up only one run on six hits while striking out seven.

The Explorers had their chances in the second game, leaving eight men on base. The only run was scored by Kern, again, in the sixth inning.

Next up for La Salle is the Liberty Bell Classic Championship game against Lafayette, scheduled to start at 8 PM at Citizens Bank Park.
