Bonzcek Leads Explorers, Fall to Bonnies

Kat Prokop led La Salle on defense with dix ground balls and two caused turnovers.

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - The La Salle University lacrosse team closed out a three game road swing on Sunday afternoon at St. Bonaventure's McGraw-Jennings Field.  The Explorers fell 15-12 in an Atlantic 10 conference match, leaving La Salle with a 5-7 overall record and a 1-2 record in the A-10, while the Bonnies remain perfect at 9-0 and 2-0.

St. Bonaventure jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, netting two goals in the first 4:33 of play, before Emily Bonczek scored the first of her four goals at the six minute mark on a free position shot.  St. Bonaventure's Nicole Motondo answered with a free position goal at 7:57 to take a 3-1 lead.  The Explorers got an offensive spark from Maura Kenville and Catie Borneman at 9:28 and 10:12 to knot the game at 3-3. 

It was the Bonnies up next, knocking in two goals before Bonczek scored her second with 6:05 to play in the half.  St. Bonaventure answered with back-to-back goals before Bonczek again scored, finishing her first half hat trick with 1:04 to go in the half.  St. Bonaventure closed out the half with a goal by Katie Hurley and assisted by Kimberly Ross with just five seconds remaining, giving the Bonnies an 8-5 advantage at halftime.

After the break, Hurley scored again, kicking off five straight Bonnie goals in the first 10:14 of the second half.  La Salle halted the scoring run on a Nicole Shubert goal from Kat Prokop at 42:37 and Tiffany Grossi scored 41 seconds later to put the score at 13-7.

La Salle held the Bonnies to just two goals in the last 19 minutes of the contest, as the Explorers tried to close the gap, registering five goals, but fell short in the end with the final standing at 15-12.

Senior co-captain Prokop led the Explorers on defense, tallying six ground balls and earning two caused turnovers.

La Salle split the goalkeeping duties, as Chantelle McCormick started out in the net and played 36:52, facing 26 shots and recording seven saves.  McCormick allowed 12 goals, before Brittany Friedrich took over and played the last 23:08 and allowed the remaining three goals, while earning two saves and facing six shots.  St. Bonaventure's Eboni Preston saw all 60 minutes and faced 24 shots while allowing 12 goals and recording eight saves.

The Explorers fell short on shots, as La Salle notched 24 shots to the Bonnies 32.  The Explorers also struggled on draw controls recording 12 to St. Bonaventure's 17.  As a  team,  the Explorers edged out the Bonnies in ground balls 22-21 and recorded just 13 turnovers to St. Bonaventure's 17.

The Explorers will return home to McCarthy stadium on Wednesday, April 12th when they host the Lehigh Mountainhawks at 4:00 p.m.
