La Salle Drops Game To Xavier, 13-1

NORRISTOWN, PA - After shutting out Xavier in the first game of the three-game Atlantic 10 set, the La Salle University Baseball team literally dropped the second game, 13-1, Friday afternoon at Elmwood Park.

Xavier (15-37, 5-18 A-10), who lost 4-0, Thursday, wasted no time in taking advantage of the first Explorer error in the contest to put three unearned runs up on the board in the first inning.

With two outs, Neil Lindgren hit a fly ball to right field, which would have ended the frame, but it was dropped. The play was followed by Sean Brewer's walk and a three-run home run by Adam Lipski, his third of the year.

After Rich Prall homered in the bottom of the first to cut the La Salle deficit to 3-1, the Musketeers added two more unearned runs in the second to increase their lead to 5-1.

The Musketeers plated three more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Sean Farrell and Matt Waskerwitz and a RBI groundout by Richard Bautista. They scored five more unearned runs in the ninth, as two fly balls to centerfield were also misplayed.

La Salle (17-30, 9-13 A-10) did not do much to help its own cause once they had runners on base. They had seven hits and added another seven runners with walks or hit batsmen, However, they left 11 on base and were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Along with Prall, Mike Essery also had two hits in the game.

Xavier's Michael Lucas (1-8) won his first game of the season, pitching six innings and striking out eight, while the Musketeers' Steve Sakosits picked up his third save of the year.

Dan Waters drops to 3-6 after throwing five innings, striking out six - pushing his season total to 82, the second most in one year at the school - and allowing not a single earned run.

La Salle will play the last game of the three-game series with Xavier, Saturday at 1 PM also at Elmwood Park, and then will finish up the regular season with a three-game set with the Owls at Temple's Ambler Field starting Thursday at 1 PM.
