AMBLER, PA - With strong performances put in by
Dan Waters on the mound and
Dennis Burge,
John Rickards, and
Justin Handler at the plate, the La Salle University Baseball team defeated Temple, 12-2, Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.
Waters threw seven innings, allowing just two runs, both unearned and struck out eight batters, which pushed his season total to 90, second highest in a single year at La Salle. He won the game, improving his mark 2006 to 4-6.
Burge ended the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, three of which gave the Explorers a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. With two outs and the bases full, he hit a ball down the right field line for a double scoring Handler, Mike Dertouzos, and Mike Essery.
Handler also finished the day 3-for-4, knocked in a run and scored three times. Rickards went 4-for-5 in the contest, and also scored three times, and had a pair of triples and hit his eighth home run of the season.
Temple (12-40, 6-18 A-10) scored its only runs of the ballgame and cut the Explorer deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back fielding errors plated one runner and put a second in scoring position, who was knocked in a batter later.
La Salle (19-31, 11-14 A-10) tallied nine unanswered the rest of the way, including a five-run eighth inning.
The Explorers will go for their first sweep of an A-10 opponent since March of 2003, when they face the Owls, Saturday with a 1 PM start.
