La Salle Takes Both Diamond Five Honors

PHILADELPHIA, PA - After taking three games at Temple over the weekend for its first Atlantic 10 Conference sweep since March 2003, the La Salle University Baseball team swept the weekly Philadelphia Diamond Five Awards as well taking Player - John Rickards - and Pitcher - Dan Waters - of the Week honors.

For Waters, it is the third time he gets the nod, previously honored March 20 and May 1. The junior won his fourth game of the season and lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.79 as he helped La Salle win the second of a three-game sweep of Temple.

He threw seven innings and allowed just four hits and no earned runs while striking out eight batters. It was his fourth game with eight or more strikeouts, and he is 3-0 in those games.

Rickards hammered the Temple pitchers over the weekend with a 9-for-12 clip in the three-game sweep with a double, three triples, and two home runs, and drove in five runs and scored six times. He batted .750 for the series with a 1.833 slugging percentage and a .786 on-base percentage.

After starting the series 0-for-2 in his first two at bats, Rickards went 9-for-10 with two walks and a sac bunt in his last 13 trips to the plate, which includes reaching base in his last nine plate appearances and recording six straight hits - back-to-back triples, a single, a home run, another single, and a double.

This was the final weekly award for the Philadelphia Diamond Five, however, an All-Diamond Five Team will be announced within the week.
