HAMILTON, NY - The La Salle Explorer volleyball team
opened the 2006 season on the road at the Colgate
Invitational, taking on UMBC on Friday afternoon. The
Explorers fell to the Retrievers 3-0 by scores of 30-18,
30-18, 30-23.
La Salle and UMBC competed in the opening match of
the Colgate Invitational. Junior
Stephanie Owen led the
Explorers with eight kills and contributed seven digs,
while sophomore
Christa Dominick knocked down seven
kills and led the team in blocks. Dominick registered La
Salle's lone solo block of the match and paired-up on two
assisted blocks. Both Owen and Dominick registered nine
points apiece in the match. Setter
Caitlin Conner tallied
25 assists and nailed one kill for the afternoon.
On defense, last season's conference leader in digs,
Carolyn Judge, continued where she left off, topping all
players with 26 digs. Sophomore
Tammi Jones added 11
digs for the Explorers and earned La Salle's only service
ace of the match.
UMBC's Sarah Ball posted a match-high 14 kills and
served four service aces to go along with 15 digs.
Teammate Jennifer Wylie led the Terriers with 16 digs.
Seter Kira Giles assisted on 37 of UMBC's 45 kills.
The Explorers fell behind early in games one and two,
but took their first lead of the match in game three. That
lead was short lived, as the Retrievers opened the lead late
in the game and never looked back.
The team will return to action at the Colgate
Invitational tomorrow when they take on Rider and host
Colgate at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
