Explorers End Tournament with Shutout of UMBC

Jeremy Ortiz's goal would push the final score to 2-0 vs. the Retrievers

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Men's soccer team came back from a disheartening loss earlier in the weekend with an impressive win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County this Sunday.  After an hour of play with a 0-0 score, two La Salle juniors took the game quickly and with authority as they scored two goals just a minute apart to finish the game with a 2-0 Explorer win.

Both teams took their time shooting throughout the first half.  It wasn't until the 63rd minute of play that La Salle made the move to push ahead.  After taking a handle on the ball, Explorer midfielder Brian Barry(Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding) set a cross to Mike Lehr(Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) on the run, who dribbled once before unleashing a shot that UMBC goalkeeper Steve King could not get a hand on.

The late goal seemed to have an instant effect on UMBC's defense, as La Salle quickly got the ball back on offense and downfield to UMBC's goal.  After some nice passing back and forth at the penalty box, Walter McMahon(Norristown, PA/Methacton) fed Jeremy Ortiz(Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) one last time before the La Salle midfielder dropped the ball into the net just one minute and three seconds after the first goal.

The Explorers ended the tournament with a 1-1 record and an overall record of 2-3.  Their next match will be against Bucknell (4-1-1) this Wednesday at McCarthy Stadium with a 7:00 start time.
