Philadelphia, PA - A three goal second half was not enough for the Explorers as they fell 4-3 to Monmouth. The contests between La Salle and the Hawks marked the first field hockey game on the newly renovated Hank DeVincent Field, which now features turf.
The Explorers dominated the first half out-shooting Monmouth 11-2, but those two shots were enough for the Hawks as they went into halftime leading 2-0. The two goals were scored in less than a minute with Hollee Hooven notching the first goal at 31:30 and Annie LoPresti adding the second off a penalty shot 40 seconds later.
Hooven came out in the second half and scored her second goal of the game quick giving Monmouth a 3-0 edge over the Explorers. La Salle did not give up and answered right back when sophomore Whitney Madron (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) connected with freshman Haley Froshour (Richboro, PA/Council Rock North) to set up senior Laura Farley's (Burke, VA/Robinson Secondary) lone goal of the game which off a penalty corner.
La Salle found itself down 3-1 with just under 30 minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman Kelly Dougherty (Devon, PA/Archbishop Carroll) saw an opening in the upper back right side of the goal and lifted the ball over the defenders and the Monmouth goalie, Chelsea Farley, to score La Salle's second goal of the game. Farley finished the game with 14 saves for the Hawks.
Monmouth came right back at La Salle and took a 4-2 lead with ten minutes remaining. La Salle was not done and senior Amy Comstock (Orangeville, PA/Benton) took it upon herself to put her team right back in the game less than two minutes later netting the third goal for the Explorers. La Salle battled the final six minutes of the game and despite out-shooting Monmouth 12-6 in the second half was not able to capitalize on goal chances in the final minutes and fell 4-3 to the Hawks.
The Explorers fall to 2-6 on the season and will take the weekend off before traveling to Rider for a 4pm contest on Tuesday, September 19, 2006.
