PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Dana Giordano scored with just over six minutes left in the second overtime to lift the La Salle Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the previously-unbeaten Manhattan Jaspers, Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The game-winning tally was started when freshman Ally Kenney dribbled up the far sideline then crossed the ball to Heather Barclay at the top of the 16-yard box. Barclay played the ball to Giordano on the left side of the box, who shot the ball low to the far post, past the Jasper goalkeeper Alicia DeFino in the 104th minute.
For Giordano, it was her second goal of the season, which matches her output during her freshman campaign. With the assist, Barclay has her second of the season, and the 12th of her career, putting her in a tie for sixth all-time at the school; Kenney records her first collegiate point for starting the play.
It was Barclay who put the Explorers on the board in the first half, scoring her first goal of the season at the 17:04 mark of the first half. Setting up right in front of the near post, Barclay deflected a pass from freshman Sara Copare into the net to give La Salle an early 1-0 lead.
They had a few more scoring chances in the first half, outshooting the Jaspers 5-0 in the opening frame, but could not capitalize on them. They held a 17-6 scoring advantage for the game and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Manhattan (6-1-0) knotted the match in the 58th minute on a shot from 20-yards out by Jill Beauchamp, who took a pass from Brittany Duhamel, turned and beat La Salle goalie Lauren Malizia.
The Jaspers thought they won the game in the first overtime when Beauchamp's shot in the 98th minute hit off the far post, but the reflection was gathered up by Malizia.
The Explorers and Malizia held the Jaspers, who were averaging more than three goals per game, to just one in the 103+ minutes of the game.
La Salle (2-5), who have now won two in a row at McCarthy Stadium, stay home for two more next weekend, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson, Friday at 7 PM, and Lehigh, Sunday at 1 PM.
