La Salle Drops Overtime Decision

Posted by: Marc Mullen

Heather Barclay recorded her 30th career point with a goal.

PHILADELPHIA - After breaking a scoreless tie in the 80th minute, the La Salle University Women's Soccer team allowed a Lehigh goal just five minute later, and the Mountain Hawks tallied again in the second overtime to take the match, 2-1, Sunday in non-conference soccer action at McCarthy Stadium.

Senior Heather Barclay scored on a 20-yard strike at the 79:49 mark in the second half to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead with assists credited to Kim Lisun and Melanie Gamble. For Barclay, it was her second goal of the year, the ninth of her career and her 30th career point, just one shy of entering the top 10 all-time at the school.

The lead was short-lived, as the Mountain Hawks evened the match with a goal by Jen Fetsick. She scored off of Hailey Coonrad's free kick from about 40 yards out, heading the ball past La Salle goalie Lauren Malizia.

Lehigh (4-5) again had a free kick in the second extra session, from about five yards deeper. Michaela Pawlewicz drove the ball into the box, and after a scramble, Daniela Milina found Lauren Calabrese for the game-winner at the 102:25 mark.

The Explorers outshot the Mountain Hawks 14-13, had more shots on goal (9-6) and corner kicks (5-2), but Lehigh goalie Julie Kafka made eight saves to register her fourth victory of the season. Malizia made four saves for La Salle, but dropped her record to 2-4.

La Salle (3-6) begins Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend, traveling to Rhode Island, Friday with a 7 PM start, and then taking on Massachusetts, Sunday at 1 PM.
