Ottawa, ON - The La Salle University Explorers led the four-time defending Canadian national Champion Carleton Ravens for the entire second half until Aaron Doornekamp nailed a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining to force an extra frame and then hit another critical three in the extra frame as Carleton eaked out the 76-75 overtime victory on Sunday night at Alumni Hall.
The Explorers built as much as an 11-point lead in the second half but could not pull away in a wildly exciting game in front of close to 3,000 screaming fans on Freshmen Night at the "Raven's Nest".
Junior Darnell Harris (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances) was held in check early but still finished with and Explorer-high of 20 points - giving him 53 point in the two games that he has seen action.
For the second time in one day five Explorers reached double figures including Paul Johnson (Washington, DC/Gonzaga) and Ruben Guillandeaux (Brooklyn, NY/St. Patrick's - N.J.) who poured in 11 apiece and freshmen Brian Grimes (Ft. Washington, PA/Germantown Academy - Brewster Academy) and Kimmani Barrett (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) who tallied 10 each.
On three separate occasions the Ravens cut the lead to one point but the Explorers were able to rebuild momentum until Doornekamp's equalizing shot.
The Explorers scored first in the extra period and built as much as a five point edge in overtime but Doornekamp hit another three-pointer to tie it at 74-74 with less than a minute to play and then fellow Canadian National Team member Osvaldo Jeany gave the Ravens the lead with a pair of free throws made with just 16 seconds to play.
The Explorers countered with a decent look but Guillandeaux, who had established an effective running jumper all weekend, had a similar shot come up short to end the game.
The Ravens narrowly missed an upset of Lousiville on Saturday night when the Cardinals' Juan Palacios hit a game-winning bucket with 1.4 seconds to play.
Ealier today the Explorers routed Laurentian 91-69 at Alumni Hall.
The loss dropped the Explorers to 1-2 on the trip to Ottawa which concludes Monday afternoon with an 11:00 AM tip against Algonquin.
