Green and Harris Take Charge in Explorer Victory at Duquesne

Posted by: Kale Beers

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Despite being saddled with foul trouble and shut out in the first half, junior Darnell Harris (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances) scored 13 points while freshman Rodney Green (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) came two rebounds shy of a double-double in La Salle's (7-8,1-2) 79-63 defeat of Duquesne (5-9, 1-2) on Wednesday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Harris, who picked up to early fouls trying to draw charges, left the game with 14.15 to play in the opening frame and would stay on the bench until the start of the second half.  Upon returning to action, Harris dropped the first of his three three-pointers just 85 seconds into the second half and finished with 13 points.  He now has 893 career points.

Green scored eight of the Explorers' first 14 points including an explosive double-pump, baseline dunk to put his team up 14-11 with 14.01 left in the first half.  He would finish with a game-high 19 points and, were it not for foul trouble of his own, would likely have registered his first career and the Explorers' first season double-double.  He finished with eight rebounds while playing only nine minutes in the second half.

The Explorers trailed only once in the game when Kieran Achara made one of Duquesne's 16 free throws to complete a three-point play to make the score 9-8 with 15.50 left in the first half.  The Explorers quickly recovered and built as much as a 19-point lead in the second half.

Duquesne used full-court, trapping pressure to counter and cut the Explorer lead to eight points (62-54) when Robert Mitchell slammed home a missed lay-up by teammate Aaron Jackson with 4:54 left in the game. Just 40 seconds later Harris launched a high-arcing, baseline three-pointer that found the net and reclaimed momentum for the Explorers who were able to cruise to their seventh victory of the season and their frst win in A-10 play.

Mike St. John (Northboro, MA/River School) had a game-high 11 rebounds and added to his team-leading assists with three more helpers in the game.

It was La Salle's third straight win over Duquesne and snapped a six-game La Salle skid.

The Explorers return to the road on Saturday night when they tip-off with the Dayton Flyers at 7:00 PM on Saturday night at the University of Dayton Arena.
