On a sunny afternoon at La Salle, the Explorers men's tennis team was beaten by St. Peter's College, 6-1, in a match that was closer than the score revealed.
In doubles, all three matches were close. At number one, the Explorers duo of Jon Maula and George Gennaoui led 7-4, but were not able to finish off St. Peter's, who came back to earn a 9-7 win. At number two, the Explorers team of Ryan Knarr and Andy Petrusky made a valiant push after being down 7-4, closing to 7-6 before losing 8-6. At number three, Eric Glick and Matt Rivera were not able to stop the St. Peter's team of Pete Czajka and Jake Baranowski, losing 8-5.
The Explorers attempted to duplicate their come-from-behind victory that they had Saturday against Fordham, but were not able to get any edge on St. Peter's deep lineup.
At number one, George Gennaoui got the Explorers on the board with an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win. At number two, Ryan Knarr battled hard but fell to Sege Igel 6-2, 6-3. At number three, Eric Glick lost to the hard-hitting Czajka, 7-6, 6-2, while Jon Maula fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. St. Peter's Chris Frakes beat Explorer Matt Rivera at number five, 6-4, 7-5, while Jake Baranowski finished off Explorer Chris Butera, 3-6, 6-1 (10-6).
"Once again our doubles didn't execute well. We either started slow or lagging off at the end, it was not a good performance coming out of the gates today and we need to work harder in the future to win the doubles point and get the momentum on our side early," said Explorer head coach Ed Colfer.
The Explorers travel to Lawrenceville, NJ on Tuesday to battle Rider University.
