The La Salle women's swimming and diving team earned a convincing 134-94 victory at George Washington on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Explorers improve to 3-1 on the year.
Sophomore Shannon Duval got things started for La Salle with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 10:32.04. She also swam past the competition in the 200-yard I.M., earning top finish (2:08.98).
Junior Carleen Caldwell also had a big day for the Explorers, taking first place in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.05) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.69). The top three spots in the 100 all went to Explorers, as freshman Holly Biro and senior Melanie Charles finished second and third, respectively.
In addition to her second-place finish in the 100, Biro claimed the gold in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 25.17. Classmate Jess Carbin edged out Duval for first-place in the 200-yard backstroke. Carbin finished in a time of 2:10.98, just ahead of Duval (2:12.50).
Junior Shannon Halleran garnered the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly, narrowly defeating GW's Nicole Mansfield by three-tenths of a second. Senior Jaclyn Kubala won the gold in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.86).
La Salle's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Biro, Kubala, Charles and Aubrey Cefalo finished first with a time of 3:43.21.
The Explorers will return to action next Saturday when they take on Atlantic 10 foe Saint Bonaventure at noon.
