PHILADELPHIA, PA - After coming off a 6-11-1 season and narrowly missing the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament, the La Salle men's soccer seniors have their eyes set on a different goal now- their futures. Several men's soccer student-athletes will be staying close to Philadelphia, while others will be venturing to new places.
Four of the seven seniors will be working for `Big Four' companies in Philadelphia's financial industry after their final semester at La Salle. Finance major Walter McMahon will begin his professional career at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The co-captain led his team to the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award and also was named to the ESPN the Magazine's Academic Men's Soccer District Two 1st-Team and the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team. Three other finance majors will get a start at KMPG; they are George Attah-Asante, Joe Heavey and co-captain Geoff Schaeffer.
"I'm proud of these guys, the seniors are a great example of what makes a complete student-athlete," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Pat Farrell.
Senior Joe Gouryeb will be commissioned as a second lieutenant with the United States Army after participating in the Army ROTC program while at La Salle. The finance and history dual major will serve in the Army's Military Intelligence branch. Although his location has yet to be determined, he will serve an eight-year obligation with the Army.
Communication major Jeremy Ortiz will try to continue his soccer career, as he heads to a United Soccer League (USL) tryout in South Carolina in the upcoming weeks for a four-day tryout. The USL invites about 100-150 soccer players to these tryouts, and the 2007 Preseason `All-Conference' and `A-10 Honorable Mention' selection will have an opportunity to impress scouts at the event.
Finance major Mike Lehr is looking to continue his education in the sciences. His aspirations include working as a pharmacist or other professional in the science field.
