Explorers Earn 10-8 Victory In Scrimmage Over Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The La Salle women's lacrosse team kicked off action for the 2007 season, claiming a 10-8 victory in a scrimmage at Navy on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Jillian Davis wasted no time getting into the offensive action, netting a team-high five goals in the win. Fellow underclassman sophomore Kelly Heiss chipped in three goals in the win. Heis also recorded two caused turnovers in the game.

Junior Emily Bonczek tallied two points in the win, scoring one goal and assisting on anothr, while freshman Alie Venuti matched Bonczek's scoring in the contest.

The Explorers also got assists from senior Tiffany Grossi and freshman Elizabeth Iacullo.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Friedrich controlled the net in the abbreviated 50 minute contest, facing 15 shots. Friedrich gave up eight goals and recorded three saves. Navy's Natalie Blandon faced 32 shots while allowing 10 goals and recorded 11 saves.

The Explorers outsho Navy 32-15 and held a 30-26 advantage in groundballs. Grossi led the Explorers with seven groundballs and Venuti scooped up five in the win.

La Salle will officially open the 2007 season on Saturday, February 24th when they host Colgate at McCarthy Stadium at 12:00 p.m. This will mark the first time the Explorers compete on the new turf.
