PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University Athletic Department recently celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 6, 2007.
Senior Woman Administrator Mary Ellen Wydan was on hand to speak at the event and to present the invited speaker, Elizabeth Paulin, Ph.D. Paulin is a professor of Economics at La Salle University and is also President of the Faculty Senate. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Houston, where she was a scholarship tennis player. She then earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas. In addition to tennis, Professor Paulin has played basketball, volleyball, and golf throughout her life.
The day was chartered by Congress in 1986 and celebrates the activies and achievements of women's participation in sports all around the nation. This year was the 21st anniversary of the day, an event that began as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman and her athletic achievements throughout life.
Prior to introducing Professor Paulin, Mary Ellen Wydan spoke of the importance of the day's topic. "On the fields, the court, the pool and the river, girls and women are developing the character traits that equal a lifetime of success. Girls who participate in sports have higher self-esteem and pride in themselves. There are the tools that make good and wise leaders, leaders who understand that to lead is to serve."
The event was celebrated by many of the school's teams and athletic groups, as well as students from throughout the university. The event also included special guests; 6th and 7th grade female students from Logan Elementary School and Our Lady of Hope Parish School.
