PHILADELPHIA, PA - A sacrificial fly off the hands of Laura Dezolt would give La Salle a shot at an unlikely comeback in the seventh inning of the second game in today's doubleheader. Dezolt brought Mary Pat Conville into homeplate after three Explorer at-bats produced four runs in the bottom of last inning to tie the game.
Due to fading daylight, the umpire would call for an international tiebreaker in the eighth inning, and the Red Foxes went up to bat with a runner placed at second. The Explorer comeback would seem out of reach, however, when Marist proceeded to answer back with six runs scored off three at-bats, including a grand slam from sophomore Jessica Green. They would close out the top of the extra inning ahead 10-4.
The girls tried valiantly in the last frame, with Laura Beth McCreesh - who pitched the entire game - coming into the lineup and bringing placed runner Michelle Sullivan in to score the fifth run. That would be the last score of the day, however, as a fly out and two stikeouts closed the door on the doubleheader.
The Red Foxes scored a pair of early inning runs in the first game to pull out the 2-0 win, despite both teams only having a combined six hits in the whole game.
The La Salle Explorers (3-7, 0-0) now take a trip to Delaware State to take part in the Bash at the Beach tournament. They will take on St. Peter's, UMBC, Monmouth, and Niagara before returning home next Tuesday to host George Washington for the start of conference play.
