Explorers Earn Third Win of Season Over Quinnipiac

PHILADELPHIA, PA - In their second home game of the 2007 season, the La Salle lacrosse team earned its third win of the season, defeating the visiting Quinnipiac Bobcats at McCarthy Stadium Wednesday afternoon.  The win improves La Salle's record to 3-2 overall, while the Bobcats drop to 2-2 for the season.  Freshman Jillian Davis led the way for the Explorers with five points, including four goals and one assist, while junior Emily Bonczek tallied four goals on the afternoon.  Senior Tiffany Grossi also contributed four points, with two goals and two assists.

Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as the Bobcats' leading scorer Ashley Valentine scored just 2:25 into the contest off a pass from Tiffany Manzi.  Manzi followed with a free position goal just under a minute later.  The Bobcats' lead would be short-lived, as freshman Davis scored her first of the afternoon just 37 seconds later, at the 3:59 mark off a pass from fellow freshman Stefany McKee.  Just over a minute later, Bonczek tallied her first goal to knot the score at 2-2.

The Bobcats answered with back-to-back goals at 5:59 and 7:44 by Manzi and Kaitlyn Vennard to give Quinnipiac at 4-2 lead.  The Explorers would respond quickly, as McKee and Bonczek scored goals within 19 seconds of each other to tie the score again, this time at 4-4.  Senior Catie Borneman gave the Explorers the go-ahead go with 14:53 to play in the half, getting assistance from fellow senior Tiffany Grossi.

With the Explorers on top 5-4, the teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, with La Salle eventually taking an 8-7 lead into the intermission.

After the break, Quinnipiac made an offensive move, as Meghan Latonick and Katy Delagi gave the Bobcats a 9-8 lead with 22:14 to play.  The teams traded three rounds of goals over the net 13 minutes.  With the clock showing 4:56 to play, Bonczek and Davis each knocked in a goal to give changed the lead back to La Salle's favor at 13-12. 

Quinnipiac's Nicole Fiore made the game interesting with 2:52 to play, scoring an unassisted goal to force another tie of the afternoon.  With 1:35 remaining in regulation, Bonczek tipped in her fourth and final goal of the afternoon, lifting the Explorers to a 14-13 victory.

In goal, Chantelle McCormick logged the first 30 minutes of play for the Explorers, recording three saves while facing 13 shots.  Brittany Friedrich controlled the goal for the final 30 minutes and tallied four goals while facing 11 shots.  The Bobcats got 60 minutes in goal from Hannah Nelson who faced 31 shots and earned 12 saves.

The Explorers will return to action on Saturday, March 17th, when they host Marist at 1:00 p.m.
