Explorers Race for the first time this Spring

PHILADELPHIA - The first race of the season got off to a slow start as the La Salle University Crew got a taste of what competition is going to be like for the spring 2007 season. The Explorers competed in the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, as they entered four boats in the following categories: Varsity men, Varsity women, Junior Varsity men and Junior Varsity women.

 

The first race of the day was the Junior Varsity women, consisting of coxswain Patrice Girard, Meg Brown, Sarah Brown, Jackie Smolarek, Karen Mahoney, Gillian Powell, Rita Brown, Molly Gatch and Katie Teevan. They finished with a time of 6:44.29, just three seconds off of third place - U.S. Military Academy (6:41.02), while Bucknell won in a time of 6:07.23.

 

The next race for La Salle was the Varsity women, consisting of coxswain Nicole Caronia, Aimee Nichols, Shauna Goetz, Kristen Weimar, Michelle Kukawski, Becky Mahney, Dani Fralen, Sadie Mazur and Michelle DeLong. They finished in a time of 6:40.45, placing them fifth out of six boats, and Navy took first with a time of 6:08.68.

 

Following the Varsity women were the Varsity men, consisting of coxswain Francesca Cupo, Terrence McClain, James Keough, Ryan Fair, Joe Hughes, Matt Stoltz, Matt Weidemer, Blaine Kneeshaw and Zack Coons. They finished in fourth place, stopping the clock in 5:15.97 - good for fourth place (out of six boats), while first place went to U.S. Military Academy (4:56.34).

 

The last race of the day for the Explorers was the Junior Varsity men, consisting of coxswain Lauren Corkery, Justin Weiner, Tim Brosious, Brett Fair, Adam Sutkus, Matt Loftus, Max Orenstein, Joe Scibetta and Bryan Schwartz. Winning that race was Temple in a time of 5:23.97, and La Salle finished with a time of 6:18.99.

 

The Explorers are off for a couple of weeks before next competing in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper, April 14 and 15.
