FARMVILLE, VA - The La Salle lacrosse team continued on the road this week taking on the Longwood Lancers at Longwood's Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The Explorers were looking at a tie as regulation ended, but Longwood's Cathleen Strain converted a free position shot attempt to the game-winning goal, as La Salle fell
9-8. The Explorers now stand at 4-3 overall, while the Lancers picked up their first victory of the season standing at 1-7.
The match-up between the Lancers and Explorers was a back and forth battle, that saw six ties and five lead changes. Longwood's Liz Sellmayer put the Lancers on the board early scoring an unassisted goal at the 27:30 mark for the 1-0 lead.
The Explorers answered the goal just 19 seconds later as Emily Bonczek knocked in her first goal of the afternoon on a free-position shot to tie the game at one. The Explorers did not stop there, as Jillian Davis scored her first goal of the day at the 6:17 mark followed by Bonczek's second at the 7:20 mark to give the Explorers a 3-1 lead.
Strain led the Lancers to a three goal run of their own, as the senior assisted on Britt Farquharson's goal to start the run and scored the next two goals on her own with the help of Kathleen Barry which gave the Lancers the go-ahead goal at 4-3 with 16:23 to play in the half.
Bonczek recorded her hat trick with 13:52 to go before the break to tie the score at 4-4 before freshman Alie Venuti notched her lone goal of the day with nine minutes to play. Venuti's goal marked the final goal for either team in the half.
In the second half, Strain picked up where she left off in first half, netting her third goal of the game just 4:08 into the second frame. The Explorers responded again as Davis scored on a free position shot followed by Bonczek's fourth goal with 23:31 to play to push the explorers to a 7-5 advantage.
Longwood's Dee Warehime and Farquharson knotted the game at seven on back-to-back goals at the 37:40 and 44:36 marks. Bonczek registered her fifth goal of the afternoon to again put La Salle on top, this time at 8-7 with 12:07 to play in regulation.
Longwood responded with 7:43 remaining on the clock, as Barry recorded an unassisted goal to tie the score once again. Strain made a quick move to her right and fired a shot over the shoulder of Brittany Friedrich to get the go ahead goal and give the Lancers the 9-8 victory.
Brittany Friedrich controlled the net for the Explorers recording eight saves while facing 26 shots. At the other end of the field, Longwood's Jennifer Holiday faced 23 shots and earned nine saves.
